When a product says “natural” or “all natural” on the label, we have been conditioned to believe that is a good thing. Natural is close to nature, and nature is good, right? Yes, that is right, but really why is important to use natural products?
Since skin and body care are our expertise, we’re going to approach this question from the angle of skincare. When you eat food, you know that natural is better — the more natural the fewer chemicals, fewer additives, and the more healthy it is.
Putting any product on your skin is similar to putting it in your mouth. Your skin is the body’s largest organ — and it absorbs everything you put on it into your bloodstream. When a skin care product or a body treatment has unnatural chemicals in it, it can put unneeded stress on your system.
So why natural products?
Even though skin care gets absorbed directly into the body, it isn’t under any strict regulations from the FDA or other entity to ensure the product it uses is safe. Many common ingredients found in skincare and beauty products have been linked to disease and body dysfunction like:
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
- Boric acid
- Fragrance (or perfume)
Choosing a brand — or a spa that uses that brand — that you know is all natural will help eliminate the dangerous chemicals commonly found in skin care.
How do I know it is a natural product?
Unfortunately, the labels “natural” or “all natural” are not currently regulated — so it can be tough to know what products really are natural, but we have a few tips for figuring it out:
- Read labels. As a general rule — the longer the ingredients list, the less healthy the product. Also, if you can’t pronounce or don’t recognize many of the ingredients — there’s a good chance you don’t want to put that on your body.
- Check with a reputable source. A great resource for finding natural products is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Base. Here you’ll find a long list of product the organization has verified uses only natural and healthy ingredients. If something is not on the list — and you’re unsure about its origins — skip it.
- Work with an expert. Getting beauty treatments from a professional is an excellent way to ensure your skincare products are top notch. Choose a spa or salon that uses only natural products and you’ll be safer in your choices.
